This project aimed to investigate the notion of displacement. My catalyst was an idle screw which was found next to my desk. I couldn't find its origin but it lead me to investigate how screws integrate within our environment and the way in which they are designed to be hidden yet play such an important role. If we were to unscrew them all, would all collapse? Does a inch long piece of steel retain that much importance?

I investigated this idea in a number of forms such as wall murals celebrating the screw and changing its role from a hidden object to that which is displayed, to deconstructing type and looking at ways in which it breaks down once you remove the different components. My work then lead to illustration and photographic exploration before finally producing a final outcome, an object which was to be treated within an installation space. The object was made from two pieces of wood which was held together by 1331 screws, the exact amount of screws in my work space while at university. As you approach the object you can see its a piece of wood; looking closer you will see two pieces of wood; looking even closer you will see its two pieces of wood held together with 1331 screws.
